Massachusetts Establishes Alternative Energy Portfolio StandardWed., Oct 15, 2008 Under the recently passed Green Communities Act, the state of Massachusetts has established an Alternate Energy Portfolio Standard (APS). The APS will require all electricity distribution companies selling power in Massachusetts to obtain a percentage of their power from alternative energy sources including combined heat and power. Any utilities failing to meet the established goals will be faced with an Alternative Compliance Payment.
Energy Recovery Systems LLC submitted comments to the MA Department of Energy Resources (DOER) encouraging the inclusion of Recovered Energy Generation (REG) as a subcategory of combined heat and power. REG utilizes waste industrial heat to generate electrical power. Thus "recycling" the energy that otherwise would have gone up the stack. See link below for the full text of comments.
